CAA Tournament is moving to Baltimore in 2014

Finally, the CAA basketball tournament is moving out of the Richmond Coliseum. Last night news broke about a press conference happening today regarding an announcement about the men’s tournament:

CBS followed up with a few more details:

“The league tourney has been played at the Richmond Coliseum since 1990, but will move to the Mariner Arena in Baltimore starting in 2013-14 — for at least three years.”

After years of coaches and fans complaining about how much of an advantage VCU had playing in their own back yard, the CAA will finally have a more neutral location. Spare me the talk of Towson having an advantage here. This ends a 23 year run at the Richmond Coliseum and although Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena isn’t exactly the Barclays Center, it’s still a better situation and surrounding area. The arena has gotten some upgrades and has a much better hotel and bar scene in the surrounding area.
Going back to 2004, George Mason was eliminated from the conference tournament six times by VCU at the Richmond Coliseum. After this March, good riddance to that dump.

Fat lot of good this will do now that VCU isn’t even in the CAA anymore. I do hate the Coliseum (even though I live in Richmond and it is convenient for me), and agree in the chorus of good riddance.

To be honest it being moved to Bmore doesn’t really help anymore. We needed this when VCU was still in our conference but now they’re not so dies it really matter?

I’m not saying GMU only lost to VCU because it was in richmond. Just saying we didn’t have the greatest run and now the tourney is in a better surrounding area in terms of distance, bar scene and hotels for the Mason fans.

This is awesome. The city of Richmond is a pit, even with VCU out of the tournament you would still have their trolls, and as everyone has said B-More is a real sports town with the harbor and bar scene. Almost same distance from Mason. NO BRAINER.

    Amen!

A good move…..and a logical one from the stand point of geography.
