With assistant coach Mike Wells going to South Florida, George Mason needed to fill void on their coaching staff. Only thing is no one thought it would be a straight up trade. Paul Hewitt has hired Eric Skeeters, formerly of South Florida to his staff. Skeeters joined USF’s staff in 2009 and also spent time at Towson and Virginia Tech previously. Hewitt tells me he has known Skeeters for close to 20 years. He is a Baltimore native, which should be a plus for local recruiting ties within the AAU ranks (he has coached with DC Assault and similar Baltimore teams).
Skeeters seems like a hire that will help to bolster local recruiting, which is a huge get for the program that has to compete with George Washington and Maryland in the DMV on the recruiting trails. Here’s a good write-up on him from the Baltimore Sun.
I asked Hewitt about what Skeeters brings to the staff:
“He has great local ties.”
“We have great staff chemistry. Roland (Houston) and Chris (Kreider) felt he would be able to maintain that chemistry. Does a good job with individual workouts and has a good reputation for advance scouting.”
Former George Mason player Ahmad Dorsett, currently an assistant at High Point was also interviewed for the position.
