Erik Copes is once again suspended for the start of the season. You may remember he and Vaughn Gray sat out the first three games of the year last season due to similar suspensions by the athletic department.
Here is the official release from the school:
Mason Junior Erik Copes Suspended to Open the Season
FAIRFAX, VA—(October 25, 2013) George Mason Athletic Director Tom O’Connor announced today that men’s basketball junior Erik Copes has been suspended for six games for violation of athletic department policy.
As a sophomore last season, Copes averaged 5.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 34 starts. In two seasons, the 6’8” forward has played in 61 games.
He is practicing with the team, but will not travel with the team. He will be eligible to return to the line-up for the non-conference home game against Rhode Island on November 30.
This a big loss for George Mason. Copes, who looked like he was back to full health from the recent green and gold scrimmage, is their toughest inside defender and rebounder. Luckily, of the first six games the Patriots’ only real challenges are against Northern Iowa and Iona. They will have him for the Diamond Head Classic, which is important, but still a hurdle for the team to have to overcome.
A bad start to a season that has high expectations for Mason.
