Previewing George Mason vs #16 UMass

George Mason will be taking on a ranked opponent on their home floor for the first time in quite a while. UMass is ranked #16 in the country and have an all-conference guard in  the speedy Chaz Williams. Williams was on crutches at the end of the team’s last game but his MRI was negative and he’s expected to play tonight. UMass has only lost once and that was a close one against Florida State. Meanwhile George Mason has lost seven of their last nine contests. With Williams possibly limited or not able to play at all, the Patriots could have an chance for an upset here. They have to be hungry for their first A-10 win and want to avoid a huge 0-3 hole within the standings.

The game will be televised on MASN, but you can also watch on the stream below:

The Atlantic 10 is going to be extremely competitive this season. GW just beat VCU last night and even Duquesne already has a conference win. The middle of the standings will most likely be very open and Mason needs to start collecting some wins. Seems easier said than done.

The key for Mason is the younger guys stepping up. The veterans lately have been letting them down and are often looking for a support or other scoring options. This will most likely be a low scoring game, probably in the 60s, as both teams play tough man defense. Mason found more scoring against Saint Joe’s and they need to keep hitting three-pointers tonight. UMass doesn’t send opponents to the line often so we can’t expect Mason to make up shortcomings there.

Even if Chaz Williams plays he could be limited and that will be a huge factor. If Mason can get Jalen Jenkins going again inside and continue to knock down threes, an upset isn’t out of the question. They will also need Erik Copes to stay out of foul trouble, as Cady Lalanne is force up front for the Minutemen. This could be an interesting one.

I’m storming the court if we win, whose coming with me!?!?

    • Kyle Stegner

Not me. I’m staying home and watching the game.

        Safe move Kyle.

    • Rick Jank

I’ll be with you in spirit, brother. 🙂

Watch out of the 60 year old Patriot center event staff guy with the pony-tail, I hear he knows Ju-Jitsu.

There will be blood. Green and gold blood. #Sigh

Yes, I expect Custer’s Last Stand. Competitive for 10 minutes then a blow out.

      • GMUPATS74

        That’s Blewitt Ball for ya!!!

  • David Houck

Not expecting a win tonight…. Just hoping to see some positive consistency in the form of 40 minutes of hustle and effort. One thing this team and any team can absolutely control is hustling. You’re going to get beat on defense, you’re going to miss shots, those things are nearly, if not completely impossible to control. The one thing this team can control is hustle and effort. Let’s do that for 40 minutes and see where it takes us.

    • Matt Cerilli

That would involve Johnny Williams sitting out tonight (but then again that’s not a bad thing!)

      • GMUPATS74

        For once we agree.

  • David Jonathan

Can we get a laranega chant!

    • GMUPATS74

Nope. He’s gone, get over it pal.

      • David Jonathan

I know he is not coming back. But it is just a way to say it was a mistake letting him go and hiring Hewitt. Chanting Fire Hewitt does not ring well.

After last night’s latest heartbreaker Blewitt lost any remaining credit he had with me. Terrible coaching!

      It’s Larranaga.
