George Mason will be taking on a ranked opponent on their home floor for the first time in quite a while. UMass is ranked #16 in the country and have an all-conference guard in the speedy Chaz Williams. Williams was on crutches at the end of the team’s last game but his MRI was negative and he’s expected to play tonight. UMass has only lost once and that was a close one against Florida State. Meanwhile George Mason has lost seven of their last nine contests. With Williams possibly limited or not able to play at all, the Patriots could have an chance for an upset here. They have to be hungry for their first A-10 win and want to avoid a huge 0-3 hole within the standings.
The game will be televised on MASN, but you can also watch on the stream below:
The Atlantic 10 is going to be extremely competitive this season. GW just beat VCU last night and even Duquesne already has a conference win. The middle of the standings will most likely be very open and Mason needs to start collecting some wins. Seems easier said than done.
The key for Mason is the younger guys stepping up. The veterans lately have been letting them down and are often looking for a support or other scoring options. This will most likely be a low scoring game, probably in the 60s, as both teams play tough man defense. Mason found more scoring against Saint Joe’s and they need to keep hitting three-pointers tonight. UMass doesn’t send opponents to the line often so we can’t expect Mason to make up shortcomings there.
Even if Chaz Williams plays he could be limited and that will be a huge factor. If Mason can get Jalen Jenkins going again inside and continue to knock down threes, an upset isn’t out of the question. They will also need Erik Copes to stay out of foul trouble, as Cady Lalanne is force up front for the Minutemen. This could be an interesting one.
