George Mason wins on Jenkins’ 75-foot Buzzer Beater

George Mason was due for some luck and they got it Saturday night against Manhattan with Jalen Jenkins hitting a hail mary shot. The game itself was one of the Patriots better efforts as Patrick Holloway, Jenkins, and Marquise Moore had great games. The issue though was that they got little help from the rest of the group and Shevon Thompson was held scoreless. They had the advantage on the boards and got plenty of good looks at the rim but finished shooting 36% from the field. A win is a win and this group certainly needed the lift.

Now they need to build on this win. They are about to face on ODU team that just upset #14 VCU over the weekend. Getting back Erik Copes definitely provided a lift as he played very well in his 17 minutes of action. Overall the team still has issues executing their gameplan on offense. Shevon Thompson looked like a different player and without Jenkins and Holloway’s heroics this game easily could have went the other way.

Great take. While that was a great play for the win there is also the reality of a rough season ahead that cannot be ignored.

Great shot by Jenkins. It was fun to see the air let out of the Manhattan bench that went nuts over every play that went their way as if they were beating Duke in the tournament. “Jump ball! jump ball! Alternate possession Manhattan, baby! Wooooo!” As great as it was to have the game end like that, it was, as they say in soccer, against the run of play.
I’m no basketball coach, but Mason’s offense looks like it’s designed to have the point guard dribble for about 10-15 seconds at the top of the key while the other four players stand still in a row waiting to receive the ball or wait for the point guard to drive the lane. There seems to be very little movement of either the players or the ball.

Manhattan is 1-4, with an RPI of 285. GMU is their Duke, so I’ll allow them a little “nuts.”

I worry that we should have lost against Manhattan. But, that is HUGELY tempered by Jenkin’s shot. Anybody else watch it ten times in a row? And, the announcers are great.

Also, damn good to see us score 11 points in 21 seconds.

The way things are going, I’ll take any win that comes our way…
