George Mason closes out regular season at VCU

The regular season ends today at VCU for George Mason. Regardless of the days outcomes within the Atlantic 10, they will face Fordham in the #12/#13 game in the conference tournament next week. Boy wouldn’t it be satisfying to upset the Rams on their home court tonight with the way this season has gone? The Rams have struggled without Briante Weber and are coming off a loss at Davidson that was one of their worst losses ever in the Shaka Smart era. They are still a lock for the NCAA tournament as most project but another bad loss would certainly make them sweat a little on Selection Sunday.

This could be one of those first to 60 points wins, type of games tonight. VCU has been consistently shooting under 40% from the field during their current losing streak. Mason was dreadful from the field against GW but prior to that they had some good shooting nights against Dayton and Saint Louis. Their problem is they don’t get enough opportunities and give the ball away too much. They won the turnover battle against GW but couldn’t capitalize on it.

Both teams’ offenses will be stagnant at times tonight but Mason needs to find a way to get Shevon Thompson going early and as a team get to the free-throw line more often. Marquise Moore, Isaiah Jackson, and Patrick Holloway have been too quiet lately and they need a scoring boost from this group tonight.

    Hearing rumors about Tom Crean.

Indiana lost today at home, AND just received a vote of confidence from the university…the kiss of death in athletics. Not sure he would be the best coach we could get, but a definite step up from you know who.

From who? I’m actually hearing rumors about Bobby Hurley. So many rumors.

Winner from Duke and winning coach from the MAC. I approve,

These coaches would turn the program around on a dime.

-17 turnover margin and -9 offensive rebounding margin…VCU +33 points off those advantages. Mason would have needed to shoot 90% to compensate. They obviously didn’t.

Interesting about Crean. I think IU would be foolish to let him go after he rescued that program after some dark days. He’d be a clear improvement, but I’d guess he would see GMU as a transitional job back into the power conferences. Hadn’t heard about Hurley (although I threw out his name as someone I’d like a few posts ago) but in addition to being a good coach he’d make RI an instant rivalry game.

Regarding Crean, doesn’t make sense to get rid of him. In the mid ’90’s Maryland would just make the sweet 16 and there was talk of getting rid of Gary Williams after he rescued the Terps program from dark days. Obviously things worked.

If he, or anybody, views Mason as a transitional job back to the power conferences that’s fine. If our next coach is courted by bigger schools that means he has been successful at Mason and turned the program around. This is a problem all of us would take in a heartbeat.

I just don’t get how we shoot 58% and lose. Typical Blewitt ball. Turnovers. Turnovers. Turnovers.
