Dave Paulsen discusses current state of roster in radio interview

Dave Paulsen recently had a radio interview discussing his position as George Mason’s new head coach. We get some real insight on his thoughts about the current roster and he talks about how they are lacking at the guard positions, especially ball-handlers and shooters. Paulsen also states how the previous coaching staff put a premium on bringing in size and athleticism, something that confused and frustrated most fans. Below is the audio:

First words out of DP’s mouth, “we have a lot of work to do.” Boy is he right about that.
Glad to hear him say we need better shooters and ball handlers. Something Hewitt ignored.
Exciting to hear him say he wanted a top notch defense. Maybe, finally, we’ll stop having guys have career nights against us.
Good words so far. Hoping coach’s words turn into reality…and wins!
    We’re behind you Coach!!

This –> Maybe, finally, we’ll stop having guys have career nights against us.

I wonder where we’re gonna find good guards this late in the recruiting season? Are there even any good recruits available? Hate to be negative but I’d like DP’s first season to be solid. Hope he can snag a good ball handler/shooter or two.

    • Chris Hirsch

Takes time for a new coach to really change much, I don’t expect much at all next season, just hope to see improved team play. Not really expecting more wins to come until year 2 or 3.

      • GMU-74-EVR

Glad you think so. I hope everyone else here doesn’t expect a complete turnaround. DP had a lot of things to address before this team can become competitive again. I just hope folks on this board will be patient.

      • mkaufman1

        I expect a national title

        • G-n-G

          I expect an NBA title.

          • GMU-74-EVR

Ok. I expect a Super Bowl Title.

        • dsnjd1

No, that’s VCU’s expectation. And they’re serious. Delusional, but serious. I wish them a painful trip back to mediocrity.

          • mkaufman1

Lol well considering what Shaka was bringing in, they were building for at least a sweet 16 run. However, now it awaits to be seen. But yes they are delusional.

    • vurbel

Maybe there is a 5th year transfer out there (ala Arledge, Terrance Shannon, etc.)

    • G-n-G

One thing will be interesting to see is if he can’t recruit someone for next year whether he and his staff can do enough individual work with the current players to help someone develop a reliable outside shot (Lockett?) and into a secondary point guard (Jackson?).

      • mkaufman1

FWIW I saw Lockett put up two “practice” threes and he actually hit them before a game. He played in the post in high school , but maybe he can help out as a guard at the D1 level.

Jackson is a “jack of all trades” sort of guy. It’d be nice to get a real backup PG behind Moore but he isn’t the worst option.

  • GMU alum2012

I’m surprised Paulsen went on the record saying
Mason needs better guard play. I hope these words encourage the current
players to improve. I would be fearful these words discourage my team. But what
do I know, I am not a coach haha.

    • vurbel

      Neither was…oh well, dead horse.

    • GaMoo79

Something of a calculated gamble I suppose. Hopefully it serves as a motivator…or DP has something up his sleeve that we don’t know about…ie, a transfer.

    • gmuhoops

Oh c’mon this isn’t a tee-ball team for 6 year-olds, he didn’t say anything disrespectful about the current players or former staff. The guard play was beyond awful on both ends of the court, turnovers, poor shooting, etc.

      • Chris Hirsch

Agreed with Ryan, the team has been terrible the past two seasons, he was stating the obvious.

        • mkaufman1

there was a reason you had that gas problem when Hewitt was introduced

      • GaMoo79

True. Players know when they are playing well and when they’re not.

      • mkaufman1

Or as we like to call the awful play “pulling a Mason”

        :sees phone ring:

  • Steve

encouraging words from coach. There certainly is alot of work to do and Im not expecting them to turn it around next season. Year 2 & 3 perhaps. The only thing i hope for next season is that they play smart, error free (or limited) basketball and to finish out of the bottom 4 in the A-10.

    • GMU-74-EVR

No reason why they cant win 7-8 games in A-10 next year. We lost a few nail bitters over the past two years that with good coaching we could’ve easily won.

      • Steve

completely agree with you. no reason they cant think they cant win a couple more road games too. Here’s to a fun season come November.

  • GaMoo79

Not only did VCU lose all their new recruits, they also had a member of the current team bail.
    Nya ha ha!

    • GMU-74-EVR

No way. Seriously? Let’s hope this is the beginning of some wins against those turds. We owe them.

  • StopWearingPurple

“uh, we have a lot of work to do”

The man gets to the point.

  • GaMoo79

Oops. Current VCU player Tillman has a change of heart, decides to stay. Not one of their top players though.
