Will Shevon Thompson get a shot in the NBA?

NBA teams have been scouting Shevon Thompson for quite some time. Thompson was arguably one of the most dominate and efficient rebounders in Division I basketball last season and has the big wingspan NBA teams love.  However he has only been playing basketball for a short period of time, since his junior year of high school, and there are some areas of the game where he still looks very raw. He has received praise while working out for several teams including Washington, Chicago, Orlando, and Houston:

Basketball Insiders sees him as a second round prospect:

“I would also mention George Mason’s Shevon Thompson. Thompson is currently considered a second-round prospect, but has been in to work out with several teams over the past 10 days. Known as being a ferocious rebounder, scouts are impressed with his timing and rebounding instincts, despite the fact that he only began playing basketball during his junior year in high school.”

Overall Thompson has big upside potential which is what typically gets guys drafted or signed as a free agent into the league. The big question is whether teams value his rebounding skills enough to take him on as a project as he will need development and some time to grow. He is not a fierce shot blocker and struggled at times scoring in the post but there are plenty of guys in the league who make a living dominating the boards. If he isn’t drafted, I think he will still get some opportunity to sign with a team and play in this year’s summer league.
