2017 recruit Goanar Mar commits to George Mason

marLast night head coach Dave Paulsen got a great start to his 2017 recruiting class, a commitment from four star forward Goanar Mar. First reported by Evan Daniels, the news brings a bold start to Paulsen’s second year at George Mason. Mar (6’7″) is known as a versatile wing with good fundamentals and a lock-down defender. He is currently attending De La Salle high school in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He’s what a Minnesota coach had to say about Mar back in February 2015:

“Gonar is getting 13 or 14 points a game,” D1 Minnesota coach Nick Carroll told Scout. “He guards the best player on every team.”

“I’ve been around some good high-level guys but I’ve never seen a kid that has been as versatile defensively,” he added.

“He blocks more jump shots than anybody I’ve seen. He deflects passes, runs the floor and his skill development [is going well].”

He visited campus earlier this month, see pictured below with Otis Livingston II, and had other offers from Iowa State, Nebraska, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Richmond, and Xavier.

Paulsen has done a great job finding under the radar talent to come in and already be able to play in the Atlantic 10. It is always great to see a kid buy in and commit this early in the process to the program. With a player like this committing we are now starting to see Paulsen bring in the more highly rated recruits that will be needed for this program to compete with the conference heavyweights.

Wow, great to get a steal like this so early for the 2017 class. Paulsen is certainly continuing to build this program up!

Great pickup!! Welcome to Mason Nation Goanar.

Paulsen is really getting me excited again for the future of Mason basketball. I did not think he would be getting this caliber of a recruit so early. Love hearing about his defensive abilities, we definitely need kids willing to play hard on both ends.

So I guess this means AJ Wilson isn’t coming here? https://twitter.com/gmuhoops/status/755111119426027521

And we still have one more 2017 scholarship left right?

Once he reclassed to the 2017 class to get more high major offers I think he was gone. Obviously he wasn’t as sold on Mason.

There could be room for both Wilson and Mar on our roster, it’s not like we’re deep at forward right now. And we still have a 2016 scholarship open as well as the remaining 2017 spot.

He seems to move great up and down the court, can he shoot though? Or is he more of a slasher?

I think with this recruit the staff was looking for more of that wing scorer, not necessarily a knock down shooter. Our last two recruiting classes has brought some good outside shooters and now we need a kid like this who can drive and finish strong at the rim.

This seems like a steal for us!

If you watch some of his high school games, he can certainly hit threes. A very versatile kid, definitely someone Paulsen can mold into a great wing player.

We desperately need someone who can cover elite wings in the A-10, maybe he can be that guy in 2 years. I was hoping Mayimba would have been on of those guys but oh well. This kid looks like he has the length and motor to do well at this level. Paulsen is building!
