Karmari Newman is also transferring

Looks like Troy Temara’s departure isn’t the only roster news as the school announced today that sophomore Karmari Newman is also leaving the program. Newman had some great moments off the bench last season, especially on-the-ball defending and three-point shooting. He was part of a deep back court that got more crowded this summer with the addition of freshman Javon Greene, who apparently has impressed the coaching staff during summer workouts. Also, with guys like Goanar Mar and AJ Wilson in the mix, Ian Boyd and Jaire Grayer won’t have to play out of position as much. The fact is the roster got a lot more competition this summer and transfers were inevitable but I did not think they’d come in August.

It’s looking like the core of this team will be Otis/Grayer/Kier/Boyd and Newman most likely was not going to beat out Greene for 6th or 7th man opportunities. Still, it’s a blow to Mason’s overall depth and replacing his defense will be more difficult than replacing his offensive production. It might be too late to add legitimate rotation players but as of now they only have nine scholarship players available for 2017-18. Not a huge issue as they went with 8-9 guys in the rotation for most of last season, but they could be hampered mightily if a key guy gets injured.

The timing is definitely odd, perhaps they each had a sit down with the coaching staff this summer and it became evident they wouldn’t be getting much playing time this season.

    Goooodbye Newman

Newman is a pure 2-guard and can’t really play at another spot. Javon Greene can play the point and backup Otis so I could see him getting more time because of that. I’m guessing Kier and Boyd secured themselves on the depth chart this summer over him as well. Still would have been nice to get him off the bench, our three-point shooting isn’t great.

While still in the early years of Paulsen kids are bound to get recruited over, this won’t be the last. Things are also more competitive now and that can sometimes produce roster changes, team finally has real expectations heading into a new season.

Karmari played hard and loved his energy. I wish him the best and hopes he finds a great home. God Bless!

You’d think with the guard heavy lineups he’d still be in line for minutes but I guess Boyd, and Greene ahead of him by more than we thought on the depth chart.

Made some big shots last year. Ball hawk. Gonna miss him.
